Jonesboro is a small community of 500 people, built along the banks of the Chandler River and nestled in the mid-coast area of Washington County. It was settled in the mid 1700s and incorporated in 1809 originally known as Chandlers River, the village thrived on forestry, sawmills and shipbuilding for many years. The inhabitants of Jonesboro pride themselves in maintaining their own k-8 elementary school, an excellent volunteer fire department and is the home of many independent and successful businesses. A motel and golf course are just a few of the businesses that attract locals, tourist and many folks from surrounding areas. The Jonesboro Elementary School students have consistently scored in the upper percent of the state. The student to teacher ratio is 1 to 12. The curriculum offers computer, art, instrumental band and chorus. In addition to a fine academic program, Jonesboro Elementary also offers an excellent athletic program. Kindergarten through eighth grade have the opportunity to participate in cross-country. Third through eighth grade may join basketball, and the upper grades may play soccer, baseball, softball and football.

NO AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM
Jonesboro School will not be having an afterschool program this year due to the lack of funding from local, state and federal funds. We are very sorry for this, as we know the children have benefited from the program for the last 11 years. We hate to loose such a worthwhile opportunity for the children of Jonesboro. If by chance some funding should come our way, we will notify the community. Some of the opportunities the children have benefited from over the years: homework assistance and reinforcement, swimming, bowling, snowshoeing, skating, hiking, GPS training, map and compass training, babysitting classes, hunter safety, ATV safety, nutrition education and cooking classes, gymnastics, soccer , volleyball and basketball instruction from local high schools and UMM students to name a few!
